OverviewThe Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.PCSD is PNNL's primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy's Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.ResponsibilitiesThe Catalysis Group in the Physical Science Division at PNNL promotes interdisciplinary research fundamental to the discovery, synthesis, and understanding of catalysts and catalytic reactions essential to modern society. To advance the field of catalysis sciences and oversee the activities in the group, PNNL seeks a Group Leader for the Catalysis Group which consists of 55 staff members, including 17 postdoctoral research associates and 16 students and interns. This is a unique opportunity to work on a diverse range of collaborative research projects and to develop an innovative individual research program in catalysis science.The research in the Catalysis Group includes homogeneous catalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, bio-catalysis, and surface science. The Catalysis Group is also an integral part of PNNL's Institute for Integrated Catalysis (IIC). The IIC draws on catalysis expertise from across PNNL and through multidisciplinary collaborations, IIC researchers develop a foundational understanding of catalytic chemistries, design new catalysts, identify new approaches to make catalysts, and provide novel solutions to energy-efficient technologies.The Catalysis Group is one of four groups in the Physical Sciences Division and has close ties with the other groups - Chemical Physics & Analysis, Geochemistry, and Materials Sciences. The group leaders report to the Division Director.The responsibilities of this position are split between the group leader role (45%) and fundamental research (55%). As group leader, the successful candidate will oversee the activities in the Catalysis Group including but not limited to providing career development coaching and mentoring, promote a supportive and inclusive work environment and identify opportunities for group members to engage in new and impactful research. Moreover, The research program of the successful candidate will focus on catalysis sciences, include collaborations with researchers at PNNL and other organizations and is expected to lead to newly funded projects through competitive proposals.Responsibilities:Oversee the activities in the Catalysis GroupProvide career development coaching, mentoring, and feedback to team leads and direct reports.Develop and implement recruiting and staff development plans.Ensure group members have appropriate skills, training, and experience.Promote a supportive and inclusive work environment.Maintain an understanding of the activities and research executed by the group members.Oversee activities and safety in shared lab spaces as well as use of shared instruments.Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to advocate for group members.Support group members in forming and maintaining strong professional networks.Conduct leading research to develop, optimize and understand catalyst and catalysis processes.Establish research collaborations in catalysis sciences throughout PNNL and other research organizations.Establish a DOE BES funded research portfolio in catalysis sciences.Moreover, PNNL Scientist and Engineer Level 5 position responsibilities include:Conceiving, planning, and executing R&D with considerable influence on scientific and technological developments.Showing leadership in defining scientific and technical objectives across programs.Leading in the capture, planning, and technical execution of complex interdisciplinary projects and programs across directorates and/or institutions.Capturing and enabling sufficient funding to support self and project teams.Contributing to directorate level and/or PNNL level operational improvement activities.Collaborating effectively with other national laboratories, academia, industry.Leading the development and execution of research strategies and building multi-directorate teams.Mentoring and developing staff across PNNL.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:BS/BA and 9+ years of relevant work experience -OR-MS/MA and 7+ years of relevant work experience -OR-PhD with 5+ year of relevant experiencePreferred Qualifications:PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, or related fields.Extensive experience in catalysis research.Proven ability to acquire funding for scientific research.Experience interacting with DOE and other funding agencies.Demonstrated ability to independently manage significant research projects.Proven record of mentoring, coaching, team-building, and supervising a team or group of scientists.Ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across an organization.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Excellent record of research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.Ability to work well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.Hazardous Working Conditions/EnvironmentNot applicableAdditional InformationNot applicable"Referral Eligible"Testing Designated PositionThis is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP)About PNNLPacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to the values of Integrity, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Courage.
